Tips on Planting a Container Herb Garden

Planting a pot herb garden could be the perfect solution for apartment living. There are many advantages to having the ability to access fresh herbs, like better quality produce and saving money. Starting out is not difficult and there's very little you will need to make it happen. Besides, nothing brightens up your palce like the sight of fresh, green plants.

Getting Going - You don't have to invest in high-priced pottery. Chances are you have ample available "planters" hidden all over your phoenix apartment. Anything from a pitcher to a pail can work as long as it can hold potting soil and doesn't leak when you water them. You can be as creative as you like. A margarine bowl cultivating chives is not very exciting, but trimmed down and placed in an inverted straw hat it becomes a conversation piece. Old tea pots, egg crates, candy bowls, and decorative bottles are just a few ideas. Just add the potting soil.

Choose Your Herbs - Make sure you pick herbs that will thrive in your particular climate. Also, try to start off by planing less finicky herbs like mint, sage or rosemary. For Phoenix apartments (warmer than typical climates) choose locations that avoid putting the container too close to the window or in direct sunlight.

If you have questions or aren't sure you can always consult the seed packet or visit your local nursery for more help and information.  Finally, be sure to not over water and to watch the amount of water the particular herb needs in a effort to avoid root rot.
