Static Electricity: compliance from non-metallic?

Lately, I've been noticing that I will accumulate a static charge high rising from most any chair or sofa. And usually, I crash a person or something metal. But lately I've noticed a rather strange behavior. I will wash my hands and I will feel a shock when I touch the water. It seemed odd I remember that the water itself does not conduct electricity unless you have something like salt on it to help lead. Today, I walked past some pot plants and touched a piece and felt a shock, thinking it was the sharp tip of the blade, which dismissed it, but it happened again. I'm thinking that the earth is acting as the ground in this situation by allowing the circuit is complete. I'm also assuming that tap water is pure water which allows current to flow through it to the pipes metal. Do you agree or have other ideas?

really makes sense ... performs a little water without salt ... that's why you surprised. pipes are of land, if they are metal and they probably are, and the current does not travel far, you just hand the hose to start, so it probably only one a few inches and it would not be much resistance there. i not on the plants were in pots unless she had said that the current was goin through it, but I do not know. Well, I hope that helps some lol
