Contemporary Landscape Design in 1960 Houston Home

We were contacted by a family who had just moved to a house built in the 1960s. The house had that classic "space age" look that was very popular in the United States ran the space race with the Soviets. During this time, architects the vision of a future where technology would eventually create a better world, where Nature would be more or less replace the innovation human. As such, the contemporary landscape that we have developed for this house was quite unique in terms of typical projects we develop. Consisted mainly of a concrete patio and a source of custom, but had virtually no vegetation incorporated into its design. This was due to the fact that homeowners had specifically requested an inorganic appearance and landscape to complement the right-angle geometry and especially the building's glass house.

The house was built in two wings linear met at a sharp angle, forming a natural playground of the class on the lawn. From the grass was something the owners wanted minimize, which made this green space in a contemporary rectangular, concrete patio. We decorated the yard, making diagonal cuts on its surface. This had the effect of broadening the meaning of the house of a linear movement by creating patterns of intersection of the reflecting angles right angles formed by the house. Then in the corner where the two converging wings, we have removed a rectangular part of the yard and laid down gravel alternating black and white in a chessboard squares.

We added a touch of green, which provided some - but not too much of a sense of nature to the courtyard and the surrounding landscape. We have planted a palm tree in the corner lonely gravel, and put a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright pot near one of the farthest corners of the courtyard. Just beyond of the two wings of the house that built small square planters out of stainless steel edges. Mondo grass planted in some of these places, and fill the rest with moonstone to maintain a sense of minimalism characteristic of custom, contemporary landscapes.

We then apply the second phase gardening project, which consisted of building a highly customized design source. The intention in the construction of this element was twofold. First the rear windows of the house was so large that seemed steep walls of glass windows typical. Adding a custom, contemporary source in the center of the courtyard would create a feature that is reflected in the glass during the day and completed the interior lighting when illuminated at night. In terms functional, the source is also intended to provide an outdoor play area especially for children, who loved playing in the water, but they were too young to swim unsupervised in a pool.

We decided that the best way to accomplish both tasks was the custom to the generation of a rectangular platform on the origin of jets that could easily bear the weight of several children. This platform should be constructed with both a robust framework and a permeable surface that allow water enter in it, as it fired in the air below the aircraft. In order to meet the functional and safety requirements, we designed the two-source platform very unique materials. First, we built a frame with stainless steel rods, not much rust. Next, we selected a very fine mesh made of wire mangled steel was folded over and over on itself until all the edges were gone. This made the steel feel more like a carpet of seaweed a piece of metal when it is finished stretching on the frame. The design worked perfectly, and allowed some water to shoot up in streams, but also produced a fine mist that adds the element of play of the source. In view our custom font, which is then suspended special lights just under your to fuel surface water flows and fine aerosol mist shot into the night.

While contemporary courtyards are relatively common in the world gardening, developing a landscaping plan around almost exclusively around the inorganic elements was a kind of challenge. The key to our success in this project lies in a careful analysis of the house of the architectural elements, a correct interpretation of the spirit of the times when it was built, and the incorporation of the two in a custom, contemporary source and patio design reflects the optimism and modernism of the era of the Space Age.
